Hello, my name is Chad McDermott, and I am a military veteran. I graduated with an I & A engineering degree. I own and operate Knotted Leathers, which is a home-based business on a part-time basis. Creating quality, not quantity, is my business value.
My wife decided that I needed something that required the use of leather. Being the person I am, I ran right down to the leather store and purchased everything l needed to work on this honey-do list, yeah that's not what happened.
I needed a hobby to keep my hands occupied (you know that saying: ‘idle hands and minds cause mischief’). I decided to take a day and go check out some leather shops at my wife’s request (okay so maybe it was more like directing me away from the kitchen and the pie she was cooking while reminding me fire, and explosives are not an acceptable learning subject while teenage boys are in the house. I’ll just say in my defense that my boys only needed a single match to start the campfires from that day forward).
Anyways, I noticed Tandy leather had a store and then decided to go looking around in it all the while thinking to myself I could do a lot of the stuff there. I purchased a few items and a chunk of leather. I soon learned that it takes time, effort, and patience, but since I'm stubborn, I stuck it out and eventually started getting into it.
When I started learning, reading, and watching videos on how to do things, my vision expanded. I kept expanding consistently until this hobby had almost taken over the entire basement of my home.
And like all good-natured people, my wife tolerated it until it started to push over into her crafting area (the only area left un-invaded by leather tools, materials, projects, etc.). Here, I was pointedly informed that if I'm going to go all-in on this hobby, it really needs to start paying for itself.
Creating and repairing leather items had turned into a passion for me at that point. That's why I continue to create, learn, and attempt to improve my skills.
Knotted Leathers was created in 2007, where I made items for people by word of mouth (pretty much just my friends). Later, we opened a stylish store in 2014.
We donate to gaming conventions and artisan fairs, non-profit and fundraisers and veteran programs.
